dry wall repair

On dry wall repair - wallpaper has been removed & in the process some of the outer layer of drywall was torn off. After several coats of paint, the area shows some of the defects. Is there something that can be put over the dry wall without replacing it? Spackling was used on the bare spots. I do not wish to repaper only paint.
