That's what is so strange about the situation. Everytime we were in the house before buying it all we smelled was a dog smell, which was in the carpets, which we can replace.

Then when we walked in after possession we were knocked out with a dead rodent smell. It seemed to be in the kitchen, so we took out the stove and refrigerator. We used an ozone machine. We have two exterminators setting traps and trying to solve the problem. One isn't much help, the other helped identify some places where they could be getting in and suggested screening the dirt floor portion of the basement.

After some improvement in the smell the residual seemed to be in a central closet next to the chimney. It's just a furnace chimney, no fireplace.

But if the source is in the walls or chimney, how do you get to it without tearing apart the walls?
