I have a Kenmore washing machine (5 years old) that started to give off a musty smell. I ran vinegar and bleach through it with hot water, but the smell remained.
Meanwhile the water pump happened to start leaking. I had a repairman fix that and he also removed and cleaned the tub and basket, but the smell still remained. I then looked under the machine and removed the black fiberglass soundproofing "board" which had some white spots on it. Upon smelling one of the bigger spots I got a severe sinus reaction. This was the source of the smell. My question is, what is this residue and where is it coming from? The spots are on this soundproofing in the rear of the machine and there are small ones on the sides too. I can't seem to locate their source though. I also washed clothes without this soundproofing and found nothing dripping on to the vinyl floor!! Any ideas????
