Direction for flooring

Professionally you should lay the flooring at right angles to the joists. This way you have the structual strength of the flooring spanning your joists as well as the strength of the subfloor.

Usually this works out to be the best looking layout as well as the joists are usually laid in the shortest direction. Sometimes, it doesn't work out that way though.
