In reply to Cracked shower stall. Fix or replace by Doug on December 26th, 2003 11:37 AM [Go to top of thread]

The shower base is made of fiberglass reinforced composite with a gel coat or acrylic finish. Repairs are a lot like repairing the front end of a corvette. Basically the quality of work depends on the skill of the person doing it and their ability to color match. The question is why the base cracked. If the base is installed in a way that allows movement or gaps, the crack could easily reappear.

My suggestion is to get in the shower and test the firmness of the floor. If it appears to flex, (bubbles, creaking or crackling noises) do not accept the repair option. Insist on a new base and proper installation. On the other hand, if the crack occured because something was dropped on it, or mishandling during shipping or installation, repair is probably fine and can be invisible. Let your builder know your expectations for professional repair, perhaps take a digital photo for the record and let him take his best shot.
