Bleeding radiators

How do I bleed the radiators in this old, oil heated house? I tried starting at the farthest radiator from the furnace like bleeding the brakes on a car, but the pipes still bang. What about the water inlet at the furnace? Should it be turned on, or off while bleeding? What about when I'm finished? I have had electric, or baseboard heat most of my life, and this is all new to me.
