TomH is on the money, I have the exact material he described for my driveway and it works great as an interim or permanent material as a base for asphalt or even concrete*.

I would probably pass on dealing with the old contractor, the likelihood they will respond outside of court is small based upon your description thus far, pictures and small claims court may be the best bet.

The cost of the stuff Tom described is usually about $150-250 per 10 yards or 270 cubic feet. If your driveway is 12' wide, at 4" thick you'd need a minimum of 10 yards per 60 feet of driveway for a light application. If the driveway is really bad, you'll need to apply it heavier than 4" I'd figure one truckload (10 yd) per 50 feet at 12' wide.

It is usually quite easy to spread out with rakes and shovels, and once fairly even, you can drive on it and it will flatten nicely.
