Craftsman GDO

Most likely the gear drive is worn out. This is a common failure mode with these GDOs.
You need to open it up (with the power off) and look at the gears. Then order the replacement parts from Sears. If you are handy, you should be able to replace them, but be careful that you get everything lined up right when you install the new parts.
Suggestion: There may be a good reason the gears broke; the door may not be balanced. So disconnect the GDO from the door and see if it opens manually from full closed to full open, smoothly.
If not, post your question to www.handymanwire.com in the Handyman Forum and someone can tell you how to balance the door if it is a tilt-up slab. If it is a sectional with torsion springs over the top of the door, best you call a pro to make the adjustments. Was this post helpful? Yes: or No:
