Prime with Kilz or BIN, or 1-2-3

Use Kilz or BIN. You can also use Zinsser 1-2-3 if you want latex (it's prabably the most user friendly.) You should tint your primer so you won't have to 2 coat over white primer.
Cover stain is not bad, but it does not have the strength of adhesion that the other 2 produst do. BIN is also from Zinsser. Cofver stain is more of a "do-it-all" primer.
I would paint it with an eggshell sheen, not flat. Eggshell is washable and may reflect some light, but the washability is worth it.
Also, use a 3/4 inch nap sp you wont have to brush into the grooves. Roll out any excess. 1/2 might do for smooth paneling
