Cathy7 i put three coats of heavy solids oil based polyurethane on my floors. this seems to protect the floors pretty well. the smell for the poly is bad until it dries and that time is somewhat longer but in my opinion the protection is far superior to the water based stuff. now my dog has to be really excited to scratch the floors like when the doorbell rings. he is 140 pounds though.
