Yes, the reason I brought it up is with one brick loose I cannot be sure of the condition of the rest of the thing. The center back would be a fire brick and should be relaid with the proper mortar - these take the brunt of the heat. A 1978 flue should be lined already with tiles in which case you can see them - you won;t see individual bricks up the flue. Chimney fires are real and very hazardous - they can burn your house down. All you need to do is monitor creosote buildup and have it cleaned - no big deal. Unlined flues are less able to handle fires and they can also leak combustion products into the home and attic space thru cracks you cannot see.
