How can I remove varnish from kitchen cabinets to paint them?

I have covered some w/Behr primer & sealer like I was told to do at Home Depot and that isn't going to work. You can scrape the sealer off, so I am assuming this will be the same when I paint them.

Please tell me how to get rid of the varnish so the sealer than the paint will adhere.
