Painting solid oak kitchen cabinets

Dear Bob,
I have solid oak kitchen cabinets that are in great condition, however they too dark. They are the original kitchen cabinets, they are around 20 years old. I don't have the money to replace them or reface them, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with them. I could either clean them and change the counter top and the handles on the doors or I could strip and sand, but the wood is naturally dark, or I could paint them. My question to you is what do you think I should do?
