The blue screen means the TV is in "video" mode. to record channels, the VCR tuner must be in control. So you need to set the TV and VCR on the same channel (on the back of the devices, 3 or 4 typically), turn the TV to that channel and put the VCR channel tuner in command...that should work if the cables are connected right.
