water seepage/sump pump install

I have a beautiful finished basement that I would like to keep intact as much as possible, but I have water seeping up through numerous and widespread cracks in the floor. I'd like to put in a sump pump, but would rather not do the drainage pipes, as it might require a reno that is more than I can handle. Can I install the sump myself, with a few knowledgeable friends?
