Mothball smell in wood

I had a wood chest with a terrible mothball smell inside. I wanted to use the chest for fabric storage and so I had to get rid of the smell.

I have found a product called Shellac to be completely effective. It is like a clear coat varnish type product so it did add some sheen to the wood but the smell is completely gone. The product cleans up with ammonia and water so it was a snap!
