Lauri, I think that you want to be sure that you get as much wax off the top as possible, even before you sand and prime. If anyone has used something like Pledge wax on thetable, it will have plenty of silicone and that will make it impossible to get any finish to lay out smoothly--without fish eyes. The fix is the same and that it to wipe the part that you are going to refinish with acetone. Trying to remove something that you can't see can seem difficult, but you will want to be pretty liberal with the amount of acetone you use and wipe with rags, a product like Rags-in-a-Box, or heavy paper towels. The idea is to release the wax with the acetone and get it absorbed into the rags or toweling. The acetone will evaporate pretty quickly from both the table top and the rags.

Because the acetone is very flammable and will spontaneously combust, it is critical that you consider the safety issues. Personally, I would wait until I could do this outside or when I could open a lot of windows. Anything like your furnace, water heater, stove or an electrical item like a fan could cause a spark which could ignite the acetone. Follow all the instructions on the container. The rags should not be stored inside after use unless they are in sealed metal cans. They can be left outside for a day or two to dry completely if they are unwadded so that air can get to all surfaces.

After all that, I would use Krylon. Again, follow all their instructions, particularly regarding working temperature and overspray. Krylon is a lacquer and you can build a nice smooth surface with it as long as you give it a smooth surface to start from.
