I can't see buying a table saw if you are scared of a circular saw. A table saw is a circular saw with a table around it but that doesn't make it foolproof. Instead one of my favorite tools is a baby sized circular saw. It's real light weight, easy to hold and maneuver and with an expensive blade (makes all the difference) you can go to town with it.
