Polyurethant application

I plan on refinishing my hardwood floors and will use water based polyurethane. The directions say to apply with a lambs wool applicator or good brush. If I apply with an applicator, do I just dump some of the polyurethane on the floor to get started or can I use a paint tray and wet the applicator as if I was using a roller?
