Hiya,
We're in the planning stages of building a Log-style lighthouse theme church and in our discussions about the foundations (basement walls) we are "stuck" as to decide on which form to use.
We're looking for more information/advice/experience to help in our decision. Currently someone is ready to donate and transport the concrete blocks and mud - basically the materials for free. On one hand, some people are concerned about the insulation and also shifting (we live in the north-eastern part of Minnesota). We know that there will be some shifting and cracks may appear however, these are genuine concerns as to the longevity of the building.
On the flip side we have the choice of using 8" styrofoam blocks - to which we'll have a solid wall and an R factor about 50 (I'm not exactly certain about the factor but we'll have it high enough to make sure it'll be warm enough.) The concerns with going this route is the cost. As a church, we do have a limited budget however we would like to see this church last for a long time and keep the maintenance low for future generations.
Just throwing this out for more info and opinions.
Thanks!
