use bleach, too?

We have a bad mildew problem in our bathroom, too, and was told that the only thing that would kill the mildew is bleach. I was told to spray it on with a spray bottle so it'd be able to sit for a while. I don't think mildew resistant paint will work if there is already mildew there.
