I'm sure you can get an adequate air compressor from Home Depot. Like I said, the air chisel itself is fairly inexpensive (Sears, Home Depot, Lowes). Just to give you an idea, the following links show the Sears heavy duty and medium duty air hammer / chisel sets:

Home depot also rents an electric powered jack hammer. It will do the job, but won't have the same precision for delicate work. Take a look and see if you are comfortable with the size and power. Just be careful not to damage the foundation or standing hearth. Wear safety glasses for this project. Ask at the rental center, and they may have an electric powered hammer option. The objective is to have rapid blows that vibrate the mortar apart rather than crush the bricks and possibly damage the structure as you would with a sledge hammer. Just let the chisel do the work, and the bricks will fall off fairly easily.
