painting flagstone

i have some incredibly dark flagstone around an interior woodstove, on two walls and surrounding floor, the area is too small for this much dark wood, however i've been told removal could be cost prohibitive, is there a way to paint the stone a lighter color, and still protect the area from the wood stove heat.
