Clean old brick

How do I clean old brick? We have recently bought a house built in 1941. The brick is dull in color and the mortar appears weathered. I have tired commercial cleaners bought at the local hardware store, but these were ineffective. I am hesitant to use a pressure washer due to the age of the brick & mortar. Can you recommend something to help restore the color and protect the brick & mortar?
