Purchasing a berm home

We are considering the purchase of a berm home. I like the place very much, but will probably not buy it. Finding a mortgage and insurance is very difficult. Do you have any advice?
I also learned the electric bill averaged over $130 per month last year. Do you have any idea why the electric bill is so high in a home which should be energy efficient?
