take a trip to you local paint store and tell them guys what your trying to do, and they hook you up with proper instructions, suppiles and advice

i would love to say to listen to what has been said but the look you want from the materials you have is a little more preparatin and materilas that has been discused heretofor

amy has a great point about primeing that no one else has mentioned and is necessary when painting bare wood or wood after sanding

also i would not suggest useing a flat or any paint that has been chemically altered from manfacture as youll not even be able to dust or clean it, it will be a dirt grabber
basicaly your looking to scratch sand with 180 grit(about), prime with oil primer like kils or zissner gold then your going to want to base coat(your cohice of colors), apply a glazeing and top coat(your chioce of colors) and finally a clear water based polyurathane (will not change color but will seal, protect)

a talk with your local paint store will help you with color chioce to get your whitewashed look and all the details that i will not go into to get a long lasting finish your will not be embarased of like if you just mixed some paint from your garage in your kitchen sink and slop it on

please dont to to a home center, your going to get bad advice, go to your local paint store and remember the more work and preparation and thinking you put into this the better the results will be
