hard wood floor

I'm taking up the old carpet and the floor is nice under the carpet except where animals wet on the rug over a period of time....besides the stains what about the staples and the nails I cant get out without doing damage to the wood floor....can this be sanded with these still in the floor? Or do I have to dig them completely out?
