In reply to Don't prime for whitewash!!! by Rocketmanallen on January 9th, 2004 09:12 PM [Go to top of thread]

you cannot apply waterbased latex paint to sanded and unprimed woodwork

you will only creat a big mess as the "raise the grain" and creat a lot of fuzz sticking up all over the woodwork

creating a whitewash look is not easy when your getting bad advice like watering down latex paint. it is quite easy and provide excellent results if your serious about this project i will guide yor the right way, there are no shortcuts it involves proper preparation materials and finsihing and work

diluteing modern day latex paints with water is a big no-no also. anytime you alter the chemical base of modern paints your going to run into problems of uneven coloration, peeling, tackeyness, runs and drips to name a few

i would personally rather not give any advice at all rather than give bad advice. its you posters with questions of refinishing that have to live with the results of your projects in your homes ona day to day basis. anyone here can answer a question, wheather or not there qualified or capable is another question.

advice such as applying waterbased paint to woodwork is not only wrong but will indeed creat a big mess that will have to be lived with or hours spent on correcting the mess

if your wanting to do the job, then do it correct

if your looking for the correct mixture to creat whitewash paint post back if your serious jan or anyone else and i will post a recepie i have used before and its not watered down latex(yuck!) its an actual recepie for whitewash paint

like i says these people have to live with the results of these projects in there homes, there family, friends and others will look at these projects and its a direct reflection of the people living in the home, so if jans mantle is ruined from bad advice it wont be my doing
