Carpet srairway

Have a 7 step stairway that i want to carpet,dont want to glue it down but have seen carpeted stairs with those carpet smoothies(piece of wood with tacks sticking thru to grab the carpet) nailed along the back of the tread to grip the carpet then the carpet is stapled under the overhang of the tread.Is this a good way and if so would one start at the bottom and work your way up or from the top going down.
