Ok .. not really sure what carpet smoothies are. But I can tell you how to install steps.
You have three parts of the stairs. The tread, the riser, and the sides. (tread is what you step on) Tackstrip is placed on both the sides (1/2 and inch away from the side) and the back of the tread.
Begin by measureing the tread from side to side. (say its 30") Cut your peice of carpet (enough to do a few steps at a time) 1 inch wider than the 30" totaling 31" Take a strait edge and and awl 1/2 inch from the edge of the capet, crease the carpet from the back. this will allow a clean edge on both sides of the step.
Begin from the bottom step. Staple the bottom edge of the carpet to the very bottom riser. Push the carpet into the tackstripand fold the rest of the carpet up onto the second step to get it out of the way. Take a kicker, and a stair tool and placeing the kicker just in front of the tackstrip you need to kick it hard to streach the carpet into the tackstrip, and secure it by pressing down at each kick (begining with the center of the step and working out) after carpet is set on the tack, then take your stair tool and hammer the carpet into the crease. then secure it with staples in the crease you have created between the tread and riser. repeat those steps all the way up.
