I have an unlevel floor on the first floor of a two story home. The house has a basement so I can easily see the floor joints . I have about 4 joints that are about 7/8" to high. Thus, my floor goes "up" when you walk across it. I was thinking of cutting a "V" (pie shaped wedge) on the ends of each joints - one at time - to see if I could get the floor to drop down some. Assuming it would drop, I was going to re-enforce the sides of the "cut/notched" joist (2X12) with 2x10" on each side of the original joist and bolt thru all three pieces. What do you think - am I "eating dream-sickles"? Is there a better way? Can a "somewhat" compentent individual fix this floor? Would I be better off to pull up the carpet, subfloor (glued and nailed) and then strike a "chalk line" and saw off the "crown". Then relay the floor and carpet?
