This information is usually provided in the installation manually. I have seen as little as 14 inches to as much as 18 inches.
The Whirlpool GH7155XH we just bought requires at least 14 inches (or 30 inches from the stove top to the bottom of the cabinet the Microwave will go under.
You should contact the maker of the appliance with the model number and get their recommendation.
