I saw this decorating idea using textured paint and a sea sponge. Apply the textured paint as usual in a series of overlapping strokes. Take the sea sponge and twist it in the paint before pulling it away from the wall, this will create a series of overlapping swirls. You might be able to re-create the circles on your ceiling.
