I am not a professional, but a friend and I installed a "Galvelume" 40 year metal roof as follows: first we overlapping felt down all over the shingles. Then, we nailed 1 x4's down horizonally on the old shingles using extra long nails. About 3 feet interval. Then installed the roof panals on top of them. Galvelume requires their special self sealing screws but they are worth it. No leaks at all after 3 years.
These Galvelume sections are the same width dimensions as most metal roof products. Be sure to figure for your overhang. You can get any length you need at 2 foot intervals.
Im sure you can find more information on this on the web. Good luck.
