not really,little cracks in the refractory do not affect the performance or safety of the fireplace. suggestions:get some refractory cement and force it into the cracks i do this every summer when i know i'm not going to use it for a while.also try to build your fires so the flames are not directly on the sides or back. that helps.avoid big rip roaring fires.another thing i would suggest(i want to get one for mine)is a pennsylvania fireback.its a cast iron plate that stands against the back of the grate to help protect the back wall.they are a little expensive but i feel they are worth it and also seem to add character.happy burning.
