Sounds like you have dried grease in the internal gears inside the GDO. You will need to disassemble the unit and clean out the old grease, and replace with new grease.
Also, check to see how easily the slider moves on the long horizontal tube that goes from the motor unit to the front wall of the garage. That might need to be cleaned and lightly lubed. Try this first.
