Hi Pete:
Yes, the old terra-catta tiles are how drainage used to be accomplished, BP (before plastic :-) Typically, over the decades, these 12 to 16" sections would "migrate" or move around a bit with subtle ground shifting, moisture changes, etc. I can remember as a kid helping my dad (a contractor) dig these out to reinstall new drainage systems. Sorry, but I haven't heard of the interior water channel base-board systems of which you speak. Best Bruce M
