Painting formica countertops is a frequently asked question. Most of us consider it a bad idea. The counter is a heavily used surface with considerable moisture, food preparation and cleaning activities. Paint is generally not durable in this environment, and damage to the paint film can harbor bacteria and other pathogens. So while it can be done, few will recommend it. If the countertop has squared edges rather than radius, it is fairly easy to resurface using new formica or tile. For any resurfacing (including paint), the counter must be sanded to promote adhesion. If you elect to paint, consider it a temporary solution until you are prepared to remove the old counters and install new; however you may get several years out of it.
