I managed to remove the black mastic tar paper by using liquid softner mixed with water. I first brushed the liquid softner on the paper then went over it with water. The more wet the better. (The water is a must, it wouldn't disolve without it) I then covered with tarps to keep it wet. (About 4 or 5 hours, sometime overnight) I was able to scrape the tar paper off with very little effort. If it takes any effort, repeat and let the chemicals do the work. Just take up what comes up real easy. This process can be messy but its alot easier than any other method I tried. I did 1/4 of the room in 5 hours just using water and a razor blade and finished the room in 3 hours using this method. Its really amazing how the liquid softner and water mixture disolves the paper and glue.
