I purchased a "4000" series over three years ago. And like all the other complaints I've been reading, I have experienced mold too within our first year. After having an aftermarket kit installed the problem reoccurred again within a few months. Again another kit was installed. However this time the technician sat my wife down and calmed her by telling her is was her washing habits! He insulted her by telling her that it was our fabric softener that was the root of all our evils. He made a suggestion of washing our whites last and to put a diluted solution of bleach and water into the fabric softener cup. Under no circumstances were we to put anymore softener in the cup or machine. We documented all involved to ready a lawsuit and we followed the last suggestions in order to seal our case. Much to our dismay, not only did the mold not reappear, but we didn't have to one time leave the door open to "dry out". The machine also lost a control board but fortunately it was under warranty, too. The same technician come out to make that repair too. His suggestion to us was to look at the washer as a computer that washes clothes. He went onto state that with the circuitry involved it was like that of a computer. He asked if we had a home computer and asked if we protected it with a surge protector. To make a long story short, we installed a heavy duty surge protector and with the thunderstorms we experience, to date no other electrical problems have existed since. My conclusion is in all fairness to Maytag, they seemed a little to eager to produce a new style machine, without researching all of the possibilites of what should be done to keep an "advanced" machine like this going. I now beleive that it is their failure to educate and update their consumers of self fixes that could be easily performed.
