replacing exterior cedar shingles

i need to know the first place to start. also i had a friend that saw a show on tv about a new and faster way to shingle a house. they nailed the shingles to a 4x8 piece of plywood and then attatched it to the house. did anybody see this or know anything about it. help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
