It's probably sewer gas and you don't need a sewer backup to have it enter your living space. A crack in the sewer line, crack in the sewer stack or any vent, a blocked vent which causes water to be vacuumed from the traps, a bad joint.... ALL of these things can compromise your sewer system and allow sewer gas to enter your living space. Have a plumber check your sewer system for leaks, cracks, blocked vents or any or all of the above...
