Kerry,
We are in the process of painting our old stained kitchen cabinets. We had a contractor hired but, due to a personal problem, he could not do it so we will proceed. This is what we have been told to do. We are washing down the cabinets with TSP and priming with Kilz primer. Two coats should be enough. We have removed the doors and done some patching with wood putty as we will be replacing the hardware. We are just starting that process. Sherwin-Williams has a ProClassic paint that is supposed to be great for cabinets so think we will try that. Otherwise, we were told by our contractor that an oil-based paint is preferred. He prefers Duron. We are painting a light ivory.
We have some friends that have been through a similar process and had great results. One friend did her cabinets white over ten years ago and they still look great. There is some slight bleeding now and she is ready to do again. They did not sand but we are doing some "brief" sanding before applying the primer just to be safe and ensure the primer and paint adheres.
We will keep you posted. This is our winter project for our kitchen remodeling so anxious to get this part finished and move on to the rest of the kitchen.
If you send us an e-mail, be sure to make the subject "Painting Kitchen Cabinets". We have SPAM alert and do not open anything we are not familiar with.
