We bought a 1500 s.f. Spanish style bungalow built in the 1920’s, in Los Angeles about a year ago. The roof is flat but seems to have adequate falls and does not pond or leak. A small portion of the roof is pitched. The attic/ceiling crawl space is un-insulated, about 18-inches gross tall and is vented by four 1-foot square louvered vents.
However, during summer, the house gets very hot and most of the heat radiates down from roof. We're looking for ways to improve roof insulation; not sure the attic crawl space can be effectively insulated (insufficient space / probably inadequate ventilation) without removing the roof sheathing. Any other options for improving roof insulation? With or without resurfacing roof at same time? Many thanks for any help you can provide –
