Removing glue from hardwood floor

We have an older home with 1" red oak hardwood floors. In the kitchen/dining area, a previous owner used black glue to attach a linoleum floor.
We want to remove the glue and refinish the floor. Is there any way besides highly volatile solvents? I notice that one person mentioned boiling water.
