Painting Wood Paneling

I have a kitchen that has a wainscoat of 1/4" wood paneling below the chair rail with drywall above. Want to paint paneling so it resembles drywall. Any suggestions.

Thinking of filling in grooves with drywall compound, then covering with fiberglas wall covering and painting.

Any better solutions?
