radiators/line-bleeding Posted by shatz on February 2nd, 2004 07:26 PM In reply to radiators by Harold hydronicnetwork.net on February 1st, 2004 08:14 AM [Go to top of thread]
i'm with harold -- they're 100pct efficient. the greatest central heating source ever! wish i had it in my 'new' house.
you may need to 'bleed' the line -- remove trapped air & ensure that entire line is filled with H20; or
your boiler may not have an auto-feed from the main H20 line; you may have to add water to the system. (typically caused from over-bleeding (!!)the line without regard to replenishing the water)
you may have a self-bleeder at the end of the line, but every unit should have its own valve (you need a 'key' to open/close). it can be a little intimidating at first (the vapour, you know!), but it's easy to get the knack of!
i think once you've got this resolved, you'll love hot-water heat!!
while i personally detest air-conditioning, and rarely use it (i have central), i must point out that the one disadvantage to H20 heat for many folks is... summer! depending on your summers, you may consider a whole-house fan for cooling (the bestbestbest in temperate zones like delmarva along the bay), or an unintrusive air-conditioning solution; when my parents decided to add airconditioning to their place, they ran chases through closets and interior walls; my grandmother, on the other hand, in her 6000-sq ft 1869 rowhouse in balto ran air thru the chimneys (every room had a coal grate). (my father's parents ran mini duct-work thru interior walls of their 1720s fieldstone house in PA.) (all of this b/c of my allergies & asthma; by the time i hit junior high i could pretty well cope with anything ma nature threw me, and we all went back to whole-house fans!)
good luck! rgds/shatz
