This is called truss lift and is caused by the difference in temperature of the tops of the trusses as compared to the bottom chords. 1/4 inch sounds excessive, the gaps are usually in the order of 1/8 inch.
The only solution I have heard is to use a flexible caulk in the cracks that can expand and contract with the gaps.
