Door won't latch Posted by Thiggy on February 5th, 2004 07:27 AM In reply to Door won't latch by Jason on February 5th, 2004 07:17 AM [Go to top of thread]
Generally, when a door won't latch which had been working properly previously, there are three usual causes. Most frequently, it is due to changes in the humidity which causes binding as the door and frame components expand due to moisture. There is the possibility of loose hinge screws, and finally there is settling of the building which causes the door frame to rack out of square. You said you tried to adjust the hinges. Why was this? Do you feel that the hinges were not mortised properly in the first place? If the door has never closed properly, that could be the case. How about a little more detail of your problem. Is the door binding on the strike side, at the top, at the floor? Is it too tight on the hinge side door stop? Does the door close properly, but the strike not engage the strike plate? More info, please. Was this post helpful? Yes: or No:
