My home was built in 1962. The field service wire is 14/2 & 12/2. It is plastic coated, rated to 70 degrees. I'm undergoing extensive remodeling projects which enclude replacing the tire and worn light fixtures. Every replacement fixture I see in the home centers state "Do not install in homes built before 1984 or with field wiring rated below 90 degrees". Since I do not wish to start ripping out dry wall to run new wires I seem to be at an dead end. I recently visited the new home of a client, who had his electrical contractors on site finishing the wiring for his $48,000 garage, and I asked them what they would do. They stated that they just ignore the warnings on the box. Who's right? I don't want to burn down my house!
